I list 5 documentaries that will change the way you view animal agriculture and possibly make you vegan if you’re not already. That’s if you dare to watch them.
If you ask any ‘new vegan’ why they decided to transition to veganism, most likely, the majority of them will tell you it was after watching one of the following documentaries.
Often, vegans get called things like ‘sensitive’, ‘soft’ or ‘easily offended’. I’ve never quite understood this considering those that call us these names are unwilling to sit down and watch uncomfortable footage of where their food comes from.
I highly recommend to anyone interested in veganism or just starting their veganism, sit down and watch these documentaries. They really do give you an insight into why vegans feel the way we do and why we choose to abstain from animal products.
I’m not saying everything included in these films is completely true. All documentaries have their biases. But the core points put across in each are eye-opening. Modern food is unhealthy, it’s making us sick, animals are suffering as a result and our environment is paying the heavy price.
Cowspiracy is probably the most famous of the five documentaries listed. The makers describe it as:
‘a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary following intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today — and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it.’
Shortly after this film went viral many people decided to go vegan as a result. This documentary is a must watch.
Earthlings was released all the way back in 2005 and explores how humans have become dependent on using animals for financial gain. It uncovers the obscene ways in which we exploit animals across the globe covering pets, food, clothing, entertainment and scientific research.
3. What The Health
You have most likely heard about this film. Released in 2017, it set the food world alight and caused much controversy. It was heavily criticized and still is today with many people within the food industry desperate to debunk its claims. I suggest you watch and formulate your own opinion. The key message here is that our current relationship with food is not a good one and you might not be eating what you think you’re eating. It was also made by the guys who made Cowspiracy.
4. Food Inc.
Food Inc. provides a scary insight into the mass processing behind modern American diets. It uncovers the ways in which big corporations have monopolised the average person’s diet and speaks to American people directly about their poor food habits. Food Inc. is a wake-up call for everyone, especially as the American diet is currently spreading throughout the world like wildfire.
5. Forks Over Knives
This documentary explores people’s transition to a plant-based diet and how it can be used effectively to treat many of today’s chronic diseases simply by avoiding animal products. Focusing on heart disease and Type-2 diabetes, two out of three of America’s biggest killers.
I hope you enjoy watching all the above, if you have any others you feel are worth watching feel free to let me know in the comments.
